Laurent Giles designed the Giles 38 in 1971
as a traditional cruising yacht, with elegant, sweeping lines,
and a long keel with cutaway forefoot and transom-hung rudder.
She is moderately, but not excessively heavy, and has a sail
area to match.
The design was altered slightly by adding a short reverse
counter stern, to become the Laurent Giles Bowman 40, which
was built by Bowman Yachts from around 1972 to 1986, before
the newer Chuck Paine designed version of the Bowman 40 came
into being.
Giles 38s were built by a number of builders, including Moodys,
Rossiters and others. This yacht was fitted out by her owner,
an engineer, over a six year period, on mouldings to Lloyds
100A1 classification from Blondecell. The keel has encapsulated
lead ballast.
