Hallberg-Rassy 37

Brief details

Builder

Hallberg-Rassy Varv AB, Ellos, Sweden

The Hallberg-Rassy 37 is a quality built centre cockpit long distance cruising yacht. Like all Hallberg-Rassys she has a fixed windscreen - allmost a trademark of the marque. The design by German Frers was an update of the very successful Hallberg-Rassy 36, with the clear aim of sharpening up sailing performance whilst retaining the previous models go-anywhere credentials.

Sailplan

The Hallberg-Rassy 37 was designed for the company by German Frers, as a comfortable long distance cruiser with a centre cockpit protected by the typical Hallberg-Rassy fixed windscreen.

The interior layout provides an excellent aft cabin, well separated from the saloon. The large engine room under the cockpit has sufficient space for additional equipment to be fitted such as a power generator. Her tankage is generous for long range cruising.

About 200 Hallberg-Rassy 37s were built between 2003 and 2012, the smallest centre-cockpit Hallberg-Rassy built after 2012 being the 40. Later 37-footers - such as the Hallberg Rassy 372 are based on different hulls with a lower ballast ratio, and are aft-cockpit.

'Yachting Monthly' commented in their print review "....she is undoubtedly well balanced and tracks well. She will be a relaxing boat to steer, even on long passages" and "....what we found almost impossible to fault was the quality of workmanship and finish".

Engine access is via a large hatch in the walk-through to the aft cabin, there being enough space in the engine compartment to install a genset if needed. The Yanmar engine seen here was an option in place of the standard Volvo.

The hull is laid up in isophthalic gelcoats and resins, with kevlar reinforcement in the keel area, and Divinycell sandwich construction above the waterline and in the deck moulding. The keel is lead, attached with 15 S/S keelbolts. On this yacht the protective rub rail fitted to the hull sides (essential for Baltic post moorings) is in S/S instead of the standard Hallberg Rassy brass, and she has extra cleats and other deck fittings such as double bow rollers, entry gates in the lifelines, etc.

Teak deck - Hallberg-Rassy 37

Teak decks were standard on the Hallberg-Rassy 37s - apart from some early Hallberg-Rassy models in the 1960s/70s, it is only very recently that Hallberg-Rassy once again offered the option of GRP decks. Thus glance at a yacht - teak decks, blue stripe below the gunwale and a fixed windscreen, and it is probably a Hallberg-Rassy (though it just might be a Malo!).

This particular yacht also hed the option of teak on the coachroof top.

Rig

This yacht has the optional Selden in-mast furling rig, with a vertically battened roached mainsail. She also has the optional laid teak on the coachroof, as well as teak decks.
