Moody 36 |
Brief details |
Builder |
Marine Projects Ltd. for A. H. Moody & Sons |
The Angus Primrose designed Moody 36 has very similar accommodation space to the later Bill Dixon designed versions which command much higher prices. The example illustrated here is an immaculately maintained and considerably updated example, but all these earlier Moody 36s offer a lot of space for the money along with surprisingly good performance. |

The Moody 36 was introduced in 1977 and is essentially an enlarged and improved version of the 1972 Moody 33 design by Angus Primrose for Moody. The original Moody 33 was immediately popular for it's accommodation, but was not thought of as particularly fast until the designer took a standard cruising boat straight off the production line and came 4th out of 54 in the AZAB Race, surprising many much more spartan "racers".
The Angus Primrose Moody 36 is as the owner calls it ".... a Moody 33 on steroids".
Given the extra length everything can be just a bit bigger than the (already spacious) Moody 33, with an internal "walkthrough" to the double berth aft cabin with en-suite heads.
About 90 of these Moody 36s were built between 1977 and 1981, with some minor variations in the aft cabin and aft heads layouts.
They have a very distinctive look with a flared bow and a recessed foredeck giving a very safe area for anchor work.
The original engines were normally 35 hp Thornycroft diesels: this yacht was re-engined with a 40 hp Volvo Penta MD2040.
