Hallberg-Rassy 31

In 1972 Christoph Rassy bought out Harry Hallberg's boatyard operation in order to expand his own Rassy yard, the company becoming Hallberg-Rassy. As Hallberg-Rassy, the company has built a long series of quality boats by top designers including Olle Enderlein and Germán Frers. Hallberg-Rassys have always been very expensive new, and for many sailors have always represented the ideal cruising yacht.

The Hallberg-Rassy 31 was designed in 1993 by the Argentinian Germán Frers, as a fractionally lighter but significantly beamier replacement for the long-running Enderlein and Rassy designed HR312. The 31 is and feels much more spacious than the older 312, and is also a better performing boat under sail.

The Hallberg-Rassy 31 remained in production for a remarkable 16 years, before finally being replaced in late 2009 by the Hallberg-Rassy 310, which is actually smaller and lighter, with a lower ballast ratio and an interior sans chart table. The HR31 is much more of a traditional cruiser than the current HR310, with a full sized chart table and an interior possibly more suited to serious seagoing.

The Hallberg-Rassy 31 was built in the Mk I version until 2005, and from 2006 onwards was built as the Mk II. There are only very minor differences between the two versions, the biggest change being a twin-spreader rig of lighter section in the Mk II.

Christoph Rassy was the first to build a sailing yacht with a fixed windscreen - the Rasmus 35 in 1966, and this feature has been part of almost every Hallberg-Rassy yacht since, and copied by other builders

Whilst the fixed windscreen and blue contrast stripe on the hull are very much a Hallberg-Rassy 'trademark', the metal-capped lower rubbing strake is a common feature on boats built in the Baltic, where mooring between posts is common - this preventing hull damage.
