This is a one-owner (and clearly very lightly used) Bavaria 37 from 2000. This is the three cabin version with a conventional battened mainsail and the optional shallow draught (1.35M) keel. She was factory fitted with hull windows to the saloon as an option when new. This design ticks a lot of boxes for family cruising, with a good inventory including electric windlass, electric halyard winch, and a clean and spacious interior and three separate sleeping cabins without using the saloon. Unlike many Bavarias, this example has only had private use by the original owner.

Sailplan

Bavaria Yachtbau, in southern Germany, have been building yachts since 1973. Initially they built fairly expensive yachts, in small numbers, but since the mid 1990s have been concentrating on volume production of spacious family cruising boats, that have proved equally popular with private buyers and charter fleets.

In production from around 1999 until 2003, the Bavaria 37 was designed by J & J Designs, and offers typical mid-period Bavaria style * in a size that is now regarded as a good family cruiser. Modern Bavarias offer yachts with an attractive 'woody' interior at very reasonable cost thanks to a very highly developed mass production 'assembly line' facility, currently turning out nearly 3,000 boats a year.

* There are at least three entirely different models called the Bavaria 37: this yacht being the first of the same named versions. Designed by J&J Designs in a similar style to other contemporary Bavarias, she has a fairly classic modern hull form with a sugarscoop stern and distinctive blue contrast strips along the lines of the saloon ports, helping to disguise the high topsides and coachroof that give excellent space and headroom below. She has a single wheel in the cockpit, and the interior is finished in lacquered sapele mahogany veneers and solid wood trim. There was a choice of keel draughts, two or three stern cabins, and battened or in-mast mainsails. This yacht has the shallow keel and two aft cabins, with a conventional battened mainsail.

In about 2007 another J&J designed Bavaria 37 was introduced. Externally this model looks very similar, the major difference in the saloon where being the galley was aft rather than midships. These 37s were labelled "Cruiser" series, and started to use lighter joinery finishes in the interior.

From about 2013 onwards a further series of Bavaria 37 Cruisers were produced, with design by Farr. These were beamier aft, with twin wheels, large rectangular hull and coachroof windows, and a drop-down transom instead of the sugarscoop sterns of the earlier J&J designs. Most of these had light interior joinery, as well as much squarer edged joinery detailing - this being significantly cheaper to build.

The engine is under the companionway steps which lift up on gas struts. The Volvo MD2030 is a three cylinder
freshwater cooled engine based on a Japanese Shibaura industrial engine. This was sold in two marinised versions,

one by Perkins (the Perama M30) and the other by Volvo as the MD2030. As such spares are widely available.
