As with all other Westerly Marine yachts the Centaur was massively built. This was partly a result of previous building experience within the company and also a reflection of the state of GRP technology at that time. All Centaurs were built to Lloyds specifications which meant that the building processes were rigorously monitored and all materials had to be approved by Lloyds in order that a certificate could be issued. Although long since out of production they still represent excellent value for money.

This is a 'B' layout Centaur, one of three options when these boats were being built. There is a vee-double forecabin, two quarter berths aft under the cockpit, and a saloon settee providing the fifth berth. The saloon table can be lowered and cushions fitted to create a another (narrow) double berth in the saloon, though few people would choose to sleep 6 aboard a Centaur very often.

The heads compartment separates saloon and forecabin, with a door shutting off the heads and forecabin from the saloon. Opposite the marine WC is a hanging space for oilies

The yacht was originall built with a Volvo diesel, probably a 25 hp MD2B, as was fitted to most of the later Westerly Centaurs. This was more power than necessary for the hull, and Westerly fitted the 25 hp engines mainly because they got a very good price from Volvo for a bulk purchase!
It appears that the engine on this yacht was changed to an 20hp Bukh DV20 in 2010 - a more modern engine with a very good reputation for longevity.

|
The hull is painted, to a good standard, though there are some minor blemishes

Above deck, the Centaur remains popular because her deep cockpit and wide side decks serve to create a sense of safety when aboard. Another reason for the continuing popularity of Centaurs is the fact that they are a stiff, powerful boat. Whether sailing or motoring, the Centaur's handling is always predictable.

This yacht has log, speed and depth instruments, plus a chartplotter, and a separate GPS, the plotter and GPS being on a swinging bracket so they can be seen in the cockpit.

The inventory includes instruments, chartplotter and separate GPS, an autopilot, plus an inflatable dinghy, a Yamaha outboard, a liferaft (overdue for service) and a small petrol generator, as well as normal running rigging etc. At the time of taking these photographs the sails were at a sailmaker being checked and valeted. |
