The Oyster Lightwave 395 is a fast racer-cruiser, this example No 19 of 31 built, having been in the same ownership since 2006. Early in his ownership the present owner raced her, often in shorthanded races, but for some years now has mostly used her as a fast cruiser. The hull was epoxied in 2021, and the engine was replaced with a Yanmar 3YM30AE in 2015.

Sailplan

In the late 1980s Oyster Yachts commissioned Carl Schumacher from Alameda, California, to design a light displacement high performance one-design cruiser/racer.

At that time the main racing yacht handicap system was the IOR rule, which gave a favourable handicap to beamy yachts with narrow ends and ballast high up giving poor angles of vanishing stability. The Lightwave 395 design ignored IOR ratings and went for a more modern design with beam carried well aft, which would be fast because of relatively low overall weight. With an originally designed displacement of 11,000 lbs, this was very light compared to most other 38-40 foot cruiser-racers. Most of these yachts including this yacht for sale have since had their keels modified, usually by addition of a lead bulb to the base of the keel, which allows them to sail well (and still fast) without the need for a lot of crew weight on the rail.

31 were launched between 1988 and 1990, not enough to establish them as true one-design racing fleet, but many raced under the CHS rule which superceded the IOR rule, and did well, particularly as short-handed racers. Although a few still race, most are now - like this yacht - used as fast cruisers.

Below: The owner has deliberately kept this yacht tiller-steered, as it suits the responsive nature of this very fast cruiser. Also with tiller raised as in these photos, the cockpit space is maximised.

Despite being tiller steered, a ram-drive autopilot is installed under the deck giving one-button switching between autopilot and hand steering.

The owner does have a complete but unfitted wheel pedestal which could be available to a buyer if required.

Owned for 18 years by a very experienced owner, this is a interesting very fast cruiser, still with some racing potential if you were inclined. The owner currently prefers to keep her tiller steered though a wheel could be available as an option if desired.
