The Fisher 34 is a traditionally styled motor-sailer on the general lines of a North Sea fishing boat, of very heavy displacement, and with an excellent reputation for seaworthiness. The Fisher 34 is generally regarded as the model in the Fisher range with the best sailing performance. This is a Mk II ketch-rigged example, which does not appear to have had a particularly hard life, the interior joinery being in very good order. She had an extensive refit at Rustler Yachts in Falmouth in 2007/8 including new hatches, new Eberspacher heating, re-varnishing much of the interior and fitting new electronics.

Sailplan

Designed by Wyatt and Freeman in 1977, the Fisher 34 was in continual production, with minor variations to internal layout and fit-out, from then until around 2010, when Northshore appeared to cease advertising new Fisher yachts. Northshore went into administration in 2013, restarted briefly as Southerly Yachts, but again went into administration in 2014. A new company, Fisher Boat Co., has since apparently acquired the moulds and is aiming to restart building these in Sri Lanka, but as far as is known none have yet been built by them.

Fisher 34s were first marketed by Fairways Marine, but have always been built by Northshore. About 130 have been built to date. They have always been very expensive boats for their length, and as they were in production for over 30 years, used prices vary greatly according to age and condition. Most early boats were ketch rigged, although sloop rig was an option fitted to a few later boats.

To quote 'Yachting Monthly' ".... sailing performance is definitely towards the motor end of the motor-sailing spectrum, but given a decent breeze on the beam they do genuinely sail. To windward, when it's miserable, their powerful engines and cosy wheelhouses make the discomfort more bearable"

Hull profile

The Mk I and Mk II Fisher 34s (this yacht being a Mk II ) had the heads forward and galley to port. The main difference between Mk I and Mk II fisher 34s was that the topsides were raised slightly to improve space below. The later Mk III boats from 1995 onwards had the heads aft and the galley became a linear galley on the starboard side of the saloon, with U-shaped seating to port. It is possible that the earlier layout was more suited to use at sea.

Above: The hull topsides were Awlgripped in 2005, and the underbody epoxied by Rustler Yachts in Falmouth in 2007. The bow area has a small re-painted section where anchor chain had scratched the topsides. Apart from this area the hull condition looks generally good for her age.
