Long keel with encapsulated lead ballast and keel-hung rudder

Although little known in the UK, the Sea Sprite 27 is a pretty traditional long-keeler in GRP, looking much like a counter-sterned version of a Twister.

She is VAT paid in the UK.

Bill Luders (1909-1999) was a US racing sailor in the 1930s, and ran a boatyard building many famous racing yachts, including Americas Cup 12 metre class boats. His designs were built by other yards, many by Cheoy Lee in Hong Kong, as well as the Sea Sprite 27/28s, 30 and 34 series of boats built in the USA.

About 800 Sea Sprites of various sizes were built in the 1970s and 1980s by different builders, though all the 27s and 28s were built by Clarke Ryder. The 27 was later renamed as the 28 without any obvious physical changes. She is a very traditional design, with long keel, counter stern and a coachroof without a raised doghouse, which nevertheless gives 5' 10" headroom below.

The moderate displacement hull has extensive inner GRP mouldings, and has ballast encapsulated in the keel.

The heads compartment is between saloon and forecabin, with basin and heads on either side. There is a shower, but this has foot pumped cold water only, and below the grating the water drains to the bilges to be pumped out later by the cockpit bilge pump.

The saloon has 5' 10" headroom throughout, and the saloon table folds,
slides and stows against the bulkhead to starboard,
increasing space in the saloon when the table is not used.

The starboard saloon berth is 6' 3" long, and the port berth is 6' 10" long
- most American boats have at least one berth for really tall people !
The forecabin has a vee-berth with infill, 6' 3" on each leg of the vee.

The Universal Atomic 5411 diesel is a fresh water cooled 11 bhp twin-cylinder engine of
approx 500 cc capacity, from Universal Motors (later becoming Westerbeke) of Wisconsin, USA.
It is based on the Japanese Kubota Z-500 industrial engine block, hence
routine spares availability is fairly easy.
