The Vancouver 27 is an uncompromisingly cruising-orientated design, with no concessions to racing or modern fashion. The heavy-displacement long keel hull is very solidly built, and the hull form copes well with added weight for stores for long passages. This yacht has a recently (2016) replaced engine, and is now priced for a quick sale.

The Vancouver 27 was designed by the Canadian Robert Harris, the first boat being built as a one-off cruiser which was then sailed from British Columbia to New Zealand and back. Later a second boat was built, and moulds were taken from this for series production, both in Canada and England. The English Vancouvers have a slightly modified hull form, wider at the waterline giving slight tumblehome to increase stiffness, and were first built by Pheon Yachts, later taken over by Northshore. The design was modified slightly to create the Vancouver 274 and then the Vancouver 28, which remained in limited production until Northshore closed down in 2013. The differences between the 27, 274 and 28 are very minor. the 28 having a fractionally lengthened stern, and a few inches raising of the topsides.

To date over 250 Vancouver 27s, 274s and 28s have been built, and many have made long-distance passages, helped by the fact that the transom-hung rudder makes it easy to fit trim tab windvane steering. Several different interior layouts have been used, with three or four berths. This yacht is a four-berth version. The hull and deck are hand laid up GRP. The lead ballast is encapsulated entirely within the hull moulding. The deck moulding has a balsa core which is replaced with plywood in high stress areas where fittings are attached.

Most Vancouver 27s and 28s have three-berth layouts: this one has

four berths, with the heads compartment forward there are two settee berths

plus two quarterberths. Saloon headroom is 6' 6" aft, slightly lower forward.

The deck has glued-down laid teak which is approaching the end of it's life.
Some minor patching of a few lifting and split planks will be done shortly,
and with this done it may last a few years yet, but the patched areas are not pretty.
Ultimately it is heading for needing removal, and either simply painting the GRP deck
with non-slip, or replacing with either fake teak or real teak. The materials cost of

changing to a painted surface is low, but the labour is significant, making
this uneconomical as a "boatyard labour job".

The aft part of the cockpit seating originally also had laid teak: we have removed this
as it was in poor condition, and gone back to painted GRP. The solar panel
is removable, and is deployed when not sailing.

Many Vancouver 27s and 28 have made very long passages including circumnavigations - this being exactly what they were designed and built for. They have a reputation for making better passage times than you would expect as being so easy to handle that they can be driven harder than many larger boats. Apart from long-distance sailing, however, a steady, forgiving boat is also useful for coastal sailing for many people.

The Vancouver 27 was used boat tested by "Yachting Monthly" in 2012, their article commenting ".... She needs wind to come alive but given that, she is delightfully well balanced and responsive" and "...the helm is light with a slight bias to weather but it can easily be balanced out for hands-off sailing without a windvane or autopilot".
