Barbican 33

The Barbican 33 hull was originally designed by Maurice Griffiths as an enlarged Golden Hind 31, round-bilged for GRP construction. The hull moulding then had a clipper bow added, and became the 36 ft "Atlantic Clipper". Reverting to the original hull, and with a different deck and coachroof, designed by Barbican yachts but approved by Maurice Griffiths, the boat became the Barbican 33.

The Barbican 33 was first built in 1979. Two options were offered, twin steel bilge plates, making her a triple-keeler able to take the ground upright, or a version with a steel centreboard and no bilge plates. Barbican 33s have, as have their Golden Hind predecessors, a good reputation as safe long-distance cruisers.

Barbican 33s were built by Barbican Yachts in Plymouth with semi-custom interior fitouts, hence individual yachts can vary significantly. This example has a teak interior, and is fitted with a non-standard stern platform and Hydrovane self-steering gear.

The forecabin has vee berths with an infill to make a double. Forecabin berths are a good size, with 6' 4" overall length and over 6 ft width at the aft end.

Under the forecabin berths is storage and two stainless steel water tanks totaling 65 gallons.

Saloon headroom is just over 6 ft.

The starboard saloon berth is 6' 4" long, and converts to a double 3' 0" wide. The port saloon berth is a 6' 6" long single, and there is also a quarterberth aft of the chart table 6' 1" long.

The rubbing strakes, toe rails, and cockpit coaming tops are solid teak, in very good condition. The seating area has Treadmaster teak-effect non-slip panels. The removable plank across the aft end of the cockpit seems to be common on Barbicans, giving a raised perch and acting as a fender board in emergency.

She is fitted with a stern platform on the transom supporting the liferaft, danbuoy etc., and protecting the Hydrovane self-steering gear from berthing damage.

This is a very well equipped yacht, carefully looked after and meticulously maintained by experienced owners who are now looking to downsize.
