The Rival 38A is one of the classic Rival range of long-distance cruisers. The 38 was built in two models, the more common 38A with an aft cockpit, and the quite rare 38CK with centre cockpit and a raised coachroof section aft of the cockpit. The Rival 38As share the "look" of the smaller Rivals, although with more length a gentler yet still distinctive sheer line is used. Whilst clearly looking like a Rival the 38A has enough space to allow a stern cabin to be fitted under a raised companionway. This particular yacht is definitely well-traveled she has circumnavigated twice, as well as making at least one Atlantic circuit. As such she is well set up for long-distance sailing.

Southern Boatbuilding produced a series of yachts under the Rival name, all designed by Peter Brett. The first boats were the Rival 31, 32 and 34, these all being fin and skeg hulls with a striking sheer. The next Rival built was the larger Rival 41, and in 1977 the Rival 38 was launched to fill the gap between the 34 and 41.

All Rivals were always designed and built as serious offshore cruisers, and the designer Peter Brett's own Rival 34, Wild Rival won the 1976 OSTAR single handed transatlantic race in one of roughest OSTARs on record, with only 76 finishers from 126 entries.

At least 63 Rival 38s were built, mostly finished in the factory, though some hulls were also sold for home completion. This particular boat is believed to be factory finished, although she has a non-standard aft cabin layout. The standard layout has two single berths, one on each side, whilst this boat has a double to port, with the heads to starboard.
