The Fastnet 34 is a fast cruiser-racer with an elegant hull and a low-profile curved deck/coachroof. This yacht is believed to date from 1984, and has been extensively upgraded by her present owner, with new headlining and upholstery throughout, a completely rebuilt engine, and new standing rigging. She is for sale now because of family health reasons.

The two French designers Michel Dufour and Jean-Marie Finot had a major influence on yacht design through the 1970s, with then revolutionary designs such as Finot's Ecume de Mer and Dufour's Arpege - lightweight cruiser-racers that could both win races and cruise successfully.

Finot went on to design a string of other yachts including the Fastnet 34, before being appointed designer of ranges of production yachts for Jeanneau, Beneteau and Comar (Comet) in italy. His design office is now Groupe Finot which continues to design both production yachts and high-tech racing machines.

The Fastnet 34 continues the theme started with the Ecume, of a fast, beamy and relatively light yacht with a quite open interior to provide space. She has a hint of a clipper bow, and pronounced tumblehome on the topsides, something rarely seen on modern boats as it adds substantially to the labour and cost of moulding the hulls. Performance and handling are typical of an early IOR era boat - fast to windward and unlike many modern boats, not prone to broach as she heels. No stability curves are available, but the tumblehome plus curved deckline will probably result in a far higher AVS (angle of vanishing stability) than almost all present production boats.

About 40 Fastnet 33s were built from 1973 onwards, many by Atlanta Marine in the UK.

The saloon settee berths are 76" in length, and the saloon headroom aft is 72"

The aft quarterberth bunk cushion is 69" x 43" at its widest forward,
but there is an uncushioned aft section increasing the sleeping length to 81"

The Bukh DV20 diesel drives a three-bladed prop via a Saildrive.

The engine was completely reconditioned in December 2006, including new cylinder liners and crankshaft bearings.

The forestay, headfoil and furling gear are currently moved aft to allow the boat to be moved by the yard's lifting gear

Photographs May 2012

The headfoil is slack as the forestay and foil are off their normal position on the bow for yard movement.

One of the features that appears in a number of Finot designed boats, including some of the Italian-built Comets, is an anchor well set far aft on deck, to keep the weight out of the ends. Some of the Comets also share the slightly clipper-profiled bow.

In this yacht the anchor well is used for storing the kedge anchors only, and has also been used for the shorepower inlet socket. The main anchor is stowed on the bow with an anchor windlass.

The present owners bought this yacht in 2006, and have since spent a considerable amount on her, concentrating mainly on safety related matters, including new standing rigging, rebuilding the engine and fitting new seacocks.

Other work done includes removing and rebedding the toerails, fitting new stanchions and bases, new deck hatches and adding a substantial stainless mast support plate as a precautionary measure. She was also re-headlined throughout, and new and very expensive Alcantara upholstery fitted. She now however needs to be sold, for health reasons.
