Rig

ketch

A one-off long-keeled centre-cockpit ketch rigged yacht on the well known Rossiter Curlew GRP hull, and built to the usual ultra-high standards of Rossiters. She is a solid cruising long-keeler with lots of character, and has been immaculately maintained by her two owners. In-mast mainsail furling and a bow-thruster aid handling, along with oversized sheet winches and good deck hardware. The owner has now had a larger new yacht built for him.

Keel type

Long keel

The Rossiter Curlew was developed from the company's smaller Pintail design, as a true cruising boat, uninfluenced by rating rules, and unashamedly old-fashioned. With a long keel and moderately heavy displacement she is seakindly, and the stepped deckline, with raised topsides forward, gives a remarkable amount of room below in a traditional yacht.

Built in 1990 as a one-off custom build, this modified Curlew was called a Lapwing, and uses an identical hull to the Curlew, but with a centre cockpit, aft cabin and ketch rig. The photo at left (and the other photos of this boat sailing, were taken by the builders shortly after her launch: she has since had a short bowsprit added to allow a larger genoa to be fitted.

Rossiter boats are built to Lloyds standards, with solid GRP hulls and wooden coachroofs, with very high quality fit-outs.

The interior is beautifully fitted with lots of varnished mahogany, in a very traditional style, and is surprisingly spacious for a 32 footer. The forward cabin has a single berth, with heads compartment aft of this to starboard, aft of useful stowage space, with a marine WC, a small pull-out washbasin, and shower. Hot water is provided by an on-demand gas heater in the aft cabin.

(She has been ashore since these photos
were taken, mostly under cover)

In the saloon the entire table can be unbolted, and an infill fitted to create a large double right across the boat. Aft in the saloon is the galley and chart table.

The aft cabin has two berths, with leecloths, though only one cushion is here in these photos. A pull-out washbasin is fitted on the port side, and between the berths is fitted a marine WC under a lift-up cover.

Seen here from the aft cabin, with the engine winterised, the Bukh diesel has access from front, back and top, via a removable panel in the cockpit sole

She was built from new with a Swedish-style fixed windscreen, as the first owner disliked canvas sprayhoods. A canvas sprayhood and complete 'camper' style cockpit cover has since been added above the fixed screen. With Lewmar 50 self-tailers as genoa winches, and in-mast mainsail reefing, plus a bow-thruster, she should be very easy to handle.

Internal photos April 2007, external photos mostly September 2007

Right: The mizzen mast is mounted on a large curved S/S structure which spreads the mast loads without requiring a pillar in the aft cabin. This structure doubles as a halliard tidy box for the mizzen
