Dufour 38 Classic

Dufour Yachts, La Rochelle, France

38' 8"

Sail area

882 sq ft

Brief details

32' 4"

A really nicely presented and clearly lightly used example of this spacious modern cruiser, this Dufour 38 is the deep keel single aft cabin 'owners' version. She is well equipped and has had a recent installation of very up to date electronics. These "Classic" series Dufours are very nicely fitted out - in many peoples' view better than the later "Grand Large" models that succeeded them that were aimed largely at the charter market.

Keel type

Deep bulbed lead fin keel and spade rudder

The Dufour 38 Classic was designed for by Olivier Poncin & Yann Chabaud and built from 1998/99 to around 2006, when it was replaced with the lower-cost and more charter-orientated Dufour 385 Grand Large, as part of the restructuring of Dufour after a change of company ownership.

The Dufour 38 Classic has a vacuum bagged layup GRP hull with NPG (isopthalic) gelcoat and first layer of laminate, with a PVC core, and balsa cored deck moulding. The deep keel versions (this yacht is one) have a lead bulbed keel, whilst the shallow draught option have iron keels.

The Dufour Classic 38 was built with a variety of options. As well as two different keels, they could have two sleeping cabins with either one or two heads, or three sleeping cabins again with either one or two heads. This yacht is the two cabin one head version, which gives a lot of storage space both below and in the cockpit lockers.

This yacht is the single aft cabin with single head option. This gives a spacious forward "master cabin" with excellent locker space, and a larger aft cabin than the twin aft cabin version.

The dinette table lowers to create a third double berth if required

The door aft of the chart table opens into a full-height locker space, with further internal lockers. Behind this is a huge cockpit locker

The locker under the heads sink shows a good standard of detail in the fit-out

An electric windlass with foot switches is fitted in the anchor locker

The standing rigging was renewed in 2012. The scanner for the Garmin HD radar was installed in 2013, along with a 12" touch-screen Garmin plotter at the helm.

The in-mast furling mast has a second track on which either a trysail or an alternative non-furling mainsail can be hoisted if required

The Dufour brochure appears to have an error in the draught of the

deep-keel version - 1.90 metres is not 6' 9" but 6' 3"

The advantage of the single aft cabin version, apart from a larger double berth than in the twin aft cabin version, is that it allows a really large cockpit locker to starboard. There is a smaller cockpit locker to port.

This is a very lightly used and well equipped example of these yachts, in just her second private ownership, with very recent expensive upgrades. The hull was epoxied when new. She is VAT paid and is in full commission, afloat in Devon.
