The Hunter Legend 356 is the UK designation (to avoid confusion with British Hunters, a different manufacturer) of the American Hunter 356 design. The Hunter 356 is most immediately externally noticeable for it's backstayless Bergstrom rig, and large cockpit arch, and internally has one of the most spacious interiors you will find on any production 35-36 footer. The Hunter 356 has quite a large sail area in a heavily mainsail-biased format, the power of the rig balanced by higher displacement than most other contemporary production boats of that length.

Introduced in 2001, the Hunter Legend 356 was designed by Glenn Henderson as a bigger and substantially more spacious replacement for the long-running Hunter 340. Originally built only in the USA, Luhrs opened a factory in Portland, Dorset, and built some boats there, the UK versions having a twin keel option, as in the yacht for sale here. The twin keels are moderately deep and bulbed, giving good performance.

The design has a modern, beamy hull with a Bergstrom sloop rig, with swept-back spreaders and no backstay. Although the lack of a backstay worries many people, in practice these rigs simply do not fall down any more than do conventionally rigged cruising boats. In the USA many of these boats are supplied with in-mast furling mains, but most UK boats have a large fully-battened mainsail, as in the case of this yacht for sale.

In around 2004 the design was modified very slightly to create the Hunter 36 model. Luhrs closed their factory in Dorset at the end of 2006, but the 36 continued in production in the USA until 2011 - the Hunter 36 having an identical hull and rig to the 356 but a slightly altered interior with a different galley layout.
