The Cornish Crabber 26 is 26' 3" on deck, and is the newest Crabber design, offering both good accommodation with 6 foot interior headroom, and good performance thanks to a David Thomas designed hull with a deep efficient centreboard. This yacht was built in 2011, and has had a lot of renewals in the present year. The hull is coppercoated, and she is clearly a lightly used boat, for sale now only because of health issues. She is afloat in Cornwall.

Sailplan

Cornish Crabbers have been building various 19, 22, 24 and 30 foot versions of their lapstrake hulled gaff cutters with centreplates since 1974. They are all fairly traditional in appearance, except for the multi-chine construction, a heritage of the plywood construction of the original smaller versions. The Crabber range, unlike other modern gaffers such as Heards and Tamarisks, are not replicas of any specific traditional craft, but have created their own niche market for attractive low-maintenance gaff rigged yachts.

All the earlier boats were designed by the company founder Roger Dongray, and were originally built of ply, moving to GRP construction as time went on. The newest design is the Crabber 26, which was designed for the company by David Thomas, with the aim of combining good accommodation with standing headroom in a 26 foot hull with good sailing performance. Apart from the higher coachroof to gain headroom, the biggest differences from the other Crabber models are in the detail hull design, and the much deeper centreboard.

The hull is solid GRP, with encapsulated lead ballast. The builders do not publish the ballast and centreboard weight, but a ballast ratio of 44% is mentioned in magazine articles, and she is rated as RCD Category 'B'. The deck is a GRP balsa sandwich moulding. Spars are varnished Sitka spruce.

Sailing magazine boat tests indicate that these boats sail extremely well - 'Practical Boat Owner' writing ".... On every point of sailing the Crabber was swift, stiff, well balanced, pleasantly responsive, remarkably smooth and superbly reassuring" and 'Watercraft', testing her on a light wind day, wrote ".... it is surprising that a boat of this type should perform so well in light weather" .

This particular Crabber 26 has a non-standard arrangement on the port saloon settee, which allows

the seat back to slot into brackets on the bulkheads and form a fifth berth above the port saloon settee.
This is probably the only Crabber 26 fitted with this option.
