A genuine classic yacht, though with a GRP hull, the Ohlson 38 is a fast yacht with a moderate fin and skeg hull form. Ohlson 38 for sale

The Ohlson 38 was designed by Einar Ohlson in the mid-1960s, and all hulls were moulded in GRP by the Tyler Boat Co. in Rochester, Kent, who were known for very high quality work. The hulls had clear resin underwater, and lead ballast encapsulated in the keel.

Ohlson 38s were completed by various yards in Scandinavia, Germany, France and the UK between 1967 and around 1980. The same design was also sold in kit form at varying stages of completion by Tylers as the Tufglas 38. The moulds were destroyed in a fire at Tylers in 1980.

While all the hulls were moulded by Tylers, the majority also had a moulded GRP deck fitted by Tylers. A number were however fitted with timber decks and hulls, the designer drawing this as an option. Most of these had a similar long coachroof profile as the GRP deck. Just two yachts were built with a rather prettier short coachroof, giving a long open foredeck, and this yacht "Cyanne" is one of those two.

The Ohlson 38 was originally designed as a cruiser-racer, but also makes a very good fast cruiser, many having made long distance passages, often shorthanded. In the June 2025 'Yachting Monthly', when reviewing a Swan 38 of similar vintage, the Ohlson 38 was one of the "alternatives to consider", the reviewer stating ".... If you are drawn to the Swan 38 because you prefer the sailing and seakeeping qualities of boats that are relatively deep and narrow rather than beamy and shallow .... One that stands out is the Ohlson 38. A fine seaboat, with many race wins and ocean crossings to her credit".
