Brief details

A quality built solid Swedish cruising yacht with fixed windscreen, this Malö 38 is in only her second ownership, and has been cruised by the present owners as far as the Mediterranean. Despite covering quite a lot of sea-miles in her time, the hull is in lovely condition. She was re-rigged this year, and is for sale now only because the owners feel age is catching up with them. A mooring in Cornwall could also be available if required.

Malö Yachts are based at Kungsviken, on the island of Orust in western Sweden. Founded in 1939 by the Olssen family, originally the boatyard specialised in custom built wooden yachts, but in the 1960s started to build GRP production yachts, all built to Lloyds standards. Malö have never been a large-scale production builder, typically building only 30 yachts a year. All are semi-custom - on current Malös you can even choose the shape of the stern - sugarscoop or traditional transom.

Designed for Malö Yachts by Leif Angermark, the Malö 38 is a solid cruising yacht with aft cockpit and fixed windscreen - similar in many ways to the Hallberg-Rassys and Najads from other Swedish boatbuilders. A total of 46 were built between 1988 and 1995.

Although there was some overlap in production, the Malö 38 replaced the earlier Bo Olssen designed Malö 116, which had a very similar general style and interior layout. After production of the Malö 38 ceased, the next model in this size range from Malö was the still-current Malö 37 model with beam carried further aft to give the option of a sugar-scoop transom, and a consequential larger aft cabin.

The hull and deck of the Malö 38 are balsa cored for stiffness and insulation, and the deck, coachroof and cockpit are covered with laid teak. The interior has a high quality fit-out in mahogany, with 7 berths in total.

Both forecabin and aft cabin have standing headroom beside the berths

The Volvo MD2003T is the turbo version of the MD2003, providing 43 bhp. On the day in May 2014 that most of these photos were taken, the yacht was launched for the season, and the engine started easily and ran well.

The hull topsides and underbody are in remarkably good condition for her age and mileage. The decks and cockpit teak was sanded and recaulked in 2012/13 and are still in good order - the thicker teak used on these yachts having a bearing on this.

A Lofrans electric anchor windlass is inside the anchor locker. The hatch in this picture is not the forehatch in the forward cabin, but a separate deck-access sail locker.

The anchor self-stows into a slot in the bow fitting, keeping the deck clear, and aiding Baltic-style boarding from the shore via the bow, hence the step on the pulpit.

The Malo 38 has the cockpit canopy designed in as part of the original fitout by Malo,

rather than an add-on item fitted later. It can be folded away in two stages,
as seen above and in the brochure photo below.

If you are looking at Hallberg-Rassys or Najads, also have a look at this Malö - she shares many of the traditional virtues of these other quality Scandinavian yachts. She is fully equipped and ready to cruise in comfort, with a good inventory including colour radar and chartplotter, Eberspacher heating, etc.
