The Rival 34 is one of the classic fin and skeg cruiser-racers from the 1970s and 80s, though geared more towards long-distance cruising than the contemporary Contessa 32. She is a deep lead keel version built to Lloyds +100A1 in 1979, and is both in remarkably good interior condition for her age, and has a good inventory including windvane and autopilot self-steering, good sails, radar and heating. Designed By Peter Brett in 1972, the Rival 34 was an extended version of the already very successful Rival 32, the Rival 34 having a a slightly deeper afterbody and longer overhangs to give steadiness in a seaway. There were two basic hull versions, one with a deep lead keel at 5ft 10ins, and a shallow iron keel at 4ft 8ins draft. 174 Rival 34s were built in all, though we are not certain when the last production boats were built, probably some time in the mid to late 1980s.

The designer's own boat, 'Wild Rival' won the OSTAR singlehanded transatlantic race in 1976, and many other Rivals have gone on to race and cruise long distances. The design has a distinctive sheerline, and the interior, although small in comparison with most modern 34-footers, is particularly well fitted out for serious seagoing.

'Yachting Monthly' described the design as ".... the Rival 34 has developed a reputation as the definitive small blue-water cruising yacht. This is mainly because she is almost indestructible with a safe and workmanlike, rather than spacious accommodation" and ".... The high, full bow makes her dry and sea kindly and the long fin keel and substantial skeg give her good manners under sail".


In around 1977 the Rival range expanded to include the Rival 38 and 38A, and the 41 and 41A, the A indicating versions with an aft cabin under the cockpit. In 1980 the Rival 36 was also added to the range. Although earlier Rival hulls were moulded by Marcon, Southern Boatbuilding took over the work in 1979, when Marcon ceased trading. The last Rival 34s were produced after Bowman took over production of the the Rival designs from Southern Boatbuilding and became Rival Bowman.

It is rare now to see a Rival 34 with as good an interior condition as this yacht - one of the problems with yachts such as the Rivals, that are good boats to cope with serious weather, is that they often tend to get a very hard life.

There is a small fold-out seating extension between the 'keyhole' bulkhead and the table, which also forms part of the double berth created if the table is lowered and an infill cushion put in place.

The main leaf of the saloon table and the top of the chart table have thin acrylic sheets on to to protect the varnishwork. The saloon cushions are fabric in very good condition, whilst the forecabin cushions are textured vinyl.

The present owner does not use the quarterberth aft of the chart table,
instead stowing a portable electric coolbox there.

The large barometer at the chart table is to be removed on sale as it is a family heirloom

The original Bukh DV20 engine has had new injectors fitted in 2017, along with a new

cutless bearing in 2015 and a new Volvo drip-free stern gland in 2020.
