Albin Ballad

Brief details

Builder

Albin Marine, Sweden

The Albin Ballad is a fast, seaworthy cruiser-racer from the 1970s, a time when competitive racing boats actually made effective cruisers. The Ballad was designed by Rolf Magnusson, as a production version of his earlier very successful 'Joker' racing design. About 1,500 Ballads were built, and many have made long offshore passages, including at least one circumnavigation.

The Ballad hull is solid GRP, with lead ballast encapsulated into the keel. The deck is a GRP sandwich moulding, with a smooth inner skin forming the headlining. The mast is keel-stepped.

Ballads are both fast for their size and seaworthy, and have a reputation for good, predictable handling. "Yachting Monthly" described her as ".... the hull is slim, well balanced and easily driven"

The saloon is fitted out in mahogany, with a small galley and chart table aft beside the companionway. The interior finish of this example has held up well over her 30 year life, a testament to the original quality of fit-out

There are two settee berths with leecloths, and two pilot berths outboard, allowing four to sleep in the saloon whilst underway, a legacy of her racing heritage. The saloon table is a small removable table which fits on legs between the settees.

Forward there is the heads compartment with marine WC with pull-out washbasin above, and hanging locker space opposite. In the bows is the vee-berth forecabin

The original engine would probably have been a Volvo MD7 of 13 hp, but in this yacht the engine has been replaced with a 20 hp Yanmar

The deck has effective non-slip. All sail handling is done forward, and the forestay has no roller gear - this being the original set-up, although some yachts may by now have been modified to lead lines aft, and have roller furlers fitted
