Fjiord 33MS |
Brief details |
Builder |
Fjiord Plast, Norway |
The Fjiord 33MS is a Norwegian-built motor-sailer with a double ended style hull with a pilothouse with an internal steering position as well as a wheel in the cockpit. Although a motorsailer with a powerful engine, the boat will genuinely sail. Fjiord were always known for very good build quality. |

The Fjiord 33MS was designed by Eivind Amble, principal designer at Fjord Plast, one of the leading Norwegian boatbuilding firms. Most Fjiord boats were (and now all are) motoryachts, but in the 1970s and early 1980s they did produce two motorsailers, at 28 and 33 ft.
The Fjiord 33MS was built from around 1971 to 1979 in GRP from moulds taken from a carvel-planked teak on oak prototype. Above the water the hull has at first glance the look of a Colin Archer style double-ender, but underwater she has a long fin keel and a separate skeg-hung rudder. She has a moderately heavy displacement and a modest sail area, though enough to allow her to sail well. Two
interior designs were produced. In one, the
large wheelhouse included an inside
steering position, navigation area and
galley, with the saloon was down a couple of
steps. The heads and a double forecabin were forward. This was version 'A' - and is the layout on this boat for sale. This has a split cockpit, with a wheel position aft and seating forward. The other version 'B' had an all-in-one
cockpit, a dinette in the saloon with the galley and a pilot
berth in the wheelhouse.
The original engines when new were 47 hp four-cylinder Perkins diesels: many may have bee re-engined by now, the boat illustrated had a four-cylinder Yanmar of 54 hp. The rig is a masthead sloop with a sailplan with a quite large genoa.
55 of these boats were built in Norway, with another five reportedly built in Denmark after Fjiord stopped building them. Fjiord motor boats are still built, though their range of motor yachts is now owned by Hanse. |
