A classic Maurice
Griffiths cruising design, the Golden Hind 26 is a tough little
shoal draught cruiser. The example illustrated is relatively new and exceptionally well
fitted out example of these yachts. She has
a GRP hull, epoxied before launch and since coppercoated, with an encapsulated lead long
keel and galvanised steel bilge plates. There is a GRP cockpit moulding,
and the decks are epoxy-sheathed ply. The coachroof is timber. The
interior is beautifully finished, with details such as a Corian
worktop in the galley, and quality fittings throughout. |

Maurice Griffiths designed a series of small
shallow draught cruisers for plywood construction in the 1960s
and 1970s, of which the 24 ft and 26 ft Eventides were the
best known. Later designs included the Golden Hinds, built
originally as a 28-footer, and later enlarged to 31 ft.
The Golden Hind 26 was designed by Maurice Griffiths in
the late 70s as a smaller version of the existing Golden Hind
31. The GRP hulls were moulded by first by Terry Erskine Yachts,
then by Mark Urry at Golden Hind Marine. About a dozen complete
yachts were built by these builders. A few other hull
mouldings were sold for owner completion, the boat illustrated, hull no 14,
was launched in
2004 and is believed to be the last built.
The Golden Hind series of yachts were conceived as East Coast
cruisers, but they have found their way to many parts of the
world, with a very good reputation for seaworthiness.
The particular yacht illustrated is one of the examples we very occasionally
see where an amateur fitout can be substantially better than
most "professionally" finished yachts.
