Hallberg-Rassy 342

Brief details

Builder

Hallberg-Rassy Varv AB, Ellos, Sweden

The Hallberg-Rassy 342 is a quality built aft cockpit cruising yacht. All Hallberg-Rassys have beautiful interior joinery, and apart from some of their earliest boats from the 1970s all were built with teak decks as standard until very recently, when buyers could choose to omit this, though few did. The 342 is a surprisingly spacious boat for her just under 34 foot length, with an interior that retains a proper chart table, a feature being lost on some newer Hallberg-Rassys.

Sailplan

Designed by German Frers, the Hallberg-Rassy 342 was introduced in 2005 as a replacement for the long-running HR34, and remained in production until 2018, with over 300 built. The hulls are moderately heavy displacement, built to Lloyds specifications with solid GRP hull mouldings, and foam-cored and teak-covered decks. Like all Hallberg-Rassys the 342s are regarded as very good seaboats, with good sailing performance. The ballast ratio is about 37%, fairly typical for a modern beamy cruiser.

The GRP hull has isophtalic gelcoat and a vinylester barrier coat with polyester main laminate, laid up by hand. The hull is Divinicell closed cell foam cored above the waterline for stiffness and insulation. Like most Scandinavian boats she has a rubbing strake with metal capping integrated into the hull, which aids use of Baltic "box" moorings. The boat has lead bulbed keel attached with 12 stainless keel bolts. The deck, coachroof and cockpit are also of foam sandwich construction.

The rig on the HR342 is 7/8ths fractional with double spreaders putting most area into the main with a smaller easily handled overlapping jib.

In comparison to the earlier Hallberg-Rassy 34, the 342 has a longer waterline length, slightly longer and wider berths and better headroom, now 6 ft 3 inches. She also has larger water, fuel and holding tanks. Most Hallberg-Rassy 342s were sold with tiller steering, with wheel steering as fitted on the yacht illustrated an expensive optional extra. The boat illustrated also has the option of laid teak on the coachroof.
