Skanner 24 |
Brief details |
Builder |
Skanner Yachts Ltd., Fordingbridge, Hampshire |
The Skanner 24 is a small GRP gaff cutter with a surprisingly good interior for her size - certainly more spacious than the contemporary Cornish Crabbers and with a quite high quality fitout. They are very solidly built, with a long keel with over 50% ballast ratio. |

Skanner Yachts started in 1981, initially building only the Skanner 19. After about 30 were sold, the company moved to larger premises in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. In 1990 Skanner Yachts Ltd. closed down. It has been reported that some further boats were later built in Cornwall. The Skanner 19 and Skanner 24 were both designed by Mike Hawes, the owner of the company.
Both the 19 and the 24 are solidly built double-ended long-keelers with gaff rigs. The hulls and decks are GRP, with Columbian pine wooden spars, and really nicely finished interiors with lots of solid teak. The interior is mainly open plan, but there is an enclosed heads aft - unusual in a boat of this age.
A number of Skanner 24 hulls were built under a contract for the government of St. Helena in the South Atlantic, as fishing vessels. These had a forward wheelhouse and a lugger rig. The remainder were fitted out as yachts, normally as gaff cutters, as in this example. Engines were normally Yanmar 1GM or 2GM, the example shown having the 1GM, and being the Southampton Boat Show exhibit for the company when new. |
