This in an exceptionally good example of the Nicholson 35, a very solid, fast and seaworthy cruiser. By modern standards they are quite heavy displacement. We sold this yacht previously in in 2011, at which time we wrote ".... A rare find - a really lovely later-built example of one of the the classic Nicholson 35 cruiser-racers. This 1979 Mk VI example has been in her present second ownership since 1987. She has glossy topsides in original gelcoat, interior joinery in lovely condition, and has very clearly been beautifully maintained". The same applies now 15 years later.

The Nicholson 35 was designed in-house by Camper & Nicholsons in 1970/71, and remained in production from 1971 to 1990, with various minor model changes from Mk I to Mk VII. Whilst the hull mouldings of some boats were contracted out, always to quality moulders, all Nicholsons 35s were finished by Camper & Nicholson themselves, to a very high standard.

About 230 were built over their long production run, and they have a superb reputation as a safe, fast passage-maker. It is is thus very rare now to find one like this 1979 example that has not had the wear and tear of multiple extended ocean passages.

Various sources quote slightly different ballast and displacement figures for these boats: the figures here being taken from a Nicholson-supplied manual for this Mk VI boat. When designed in the early 1970s the Nicholson 35 was regarded as moderate displacement and fast enough to be classed as a cruiser-racer: now she is seen as a quite heavy displacement cruiser, though with enough sail area to be quite fast in most conditions. In 2016 a 'Yachting Monthy' used boat report said "....Like all long fin-keeled heavy displacement cruisers the Nicholson 35 is designed to take almost any adverse weather and sea conditions in her stride".

As one of the later boats she has a more conventional shaft drive to a P-bracket instead of the hydraulic drive to a prop mounted in the aft end of keel that was fitted to early boats, Later boats also have a slightly different internal layout with a quarter berth aft of the chart table.

This is genuinely a remarkably "original" example of one of these classic cruising yachts, which has led a very sheltered and cosseted life compared to most other Nic 35s. The present owner has just bought another beautiful classic yacht, and "Affinity" is now in need of another careful owner. It would almost be a shame to batter her round the world, though the boat is up to it!
