Etap 32S

ashore Devon

Etap Yachting N.V., Malle, Belgium

32' 3"

Sail area

590 sq ft

Brief details

27' 6"

Fractional sloop

The Etap 32S is a modern fast family cruiser with the usual high build quality and careful and innovative detailing of the Etap brand. Like all Etaps, she is 'unsinkable' - even if holed Etaps will not just float but still be sailable, though a little slower. This 2004 Etap 32S is a shallow draught tandem keel version with EVS steering, and is in very good condition throughout, with quite a lot of recent updates. The present owners have owned her since 2011 and sailed her both locally from their SW England base, and cruised from there to Brittany and the west coast of Scotland. They are only selling now because they have now bought a larger Etap.

Etap were a large Belgian company with a variety of products, and have been building yachts since 1970. In 1990 the yacht building division was split off as a separate company, Etap Yachting. In 2008 the Etap yachting division was bought by Dehler, but in 2009 Dehler then became insolvent. Etap briefly restarted as an independent company, but then again ceased trading.

Etaps have always been 'different' - all their boats are unsinkable, with double skins and closed-cell polyurethane foam. This also gives excellent insulation to the interior, minimising condensation. Various Etaps have been test sailed whilst completely flooded, and they are still capable of sailing. The company made extensive use of custom aluminium and stainless fabrications produced in-house. Etaps are not cheap, but are very well engineered and built.

In production until the company ceased trading, the Etap 32S is a modern fast cruiser with some unusual but practical design features, and all the high quality engineering that made Etaps different from other production boatbuilders.

Tandem keel

The Etap's tandem keel is a development of the Warwick Collins tandem keel as fitted to 1990s Americas Cup racing yachts, as well as to some subsequent cruising yachts including Bavarias and Sadlers. For cruising yachts the twin fins, combined with a bulb flattened to form a wing, offer shallow draught with good performance.

Cockpit forward

The mainsheet can either clip onto a fixed point in the cockpit, or a removable traveller can
be fitted across the centre of the cockpit, allowing good control when sailing, and
a clear cockpit when moored. Installing and removing the traveller is very quick.

Cockpit and EVS

The EVS steering is unique to Etaps: it is a vertical geared whipstaff with a circular top that acts
like a wheel, without taking up the same cockpit space as a pedestal and normal wheel. Once
people have tried this, most like it. It can however be very simply removed and a tiller fitted to
the top of the rudder stock where it protrudes from the aft cockpit moulding. Etaps were

sold with tillers or EVS as options.

Under way

The plotter is a ruggedised and IP67 waterproof 10.1" screen PC which also
shows AIS and data from the Raymarine instruments.

Brochure photo

Whilst far from the cheapest modern 32-foot cruising yacht, the Etaps offer a lot of advantages, quite apart from proven unsinkability. The double skin construction virtually eliminates interior condensation, the boats are very well built, and and the design has many clever details not found on other marques. Since 2011 the present (second) owners of this yacht have both sailed her locally from their Devon base and cruised the French Atlantic coast, Northern Brittany and the Channel Islands, as well as on the west coast of Scotland as far as Skye and South Uist. They are only selling because they have now bought a larger Etap.
