The Rival 32 is a solid traditional cruiser, with longish fin keel and skeg hung rudder. The Rival 31, 32 and 34 are very similar, all being very well respected as seagoing cruisers. Many Rivals have made long ocean passages. This yacht has been in the same family ownership for over 30 years, but has been unused for some time following the passing away of the owner. She now needs work to bring her back into use, but the hull is sound and she is actually very well equipped.

Sailplan

The Rival 32 was designed by Peter Brett in around 1971, all the 200 hulls produced being moulded by  Marine Construction (Woolston) Ltd. Whilst many bare hulls were sold for amateur completion to varying standards, those sold as complete boats went to Southern Boatbuilding for completion and sale. This is one of these original factory-fitted yachts.

The design was a longer counter sterned development of the 1967 designed Rival 31, and later evolved into the better-known Rival 34 - although actually more Rival 32s than 34s were built.

Forecabin
Forecabin

The timber inner coachroof lining in the forepeak had been painted white some years ago, but since the boat was left unused this paint has started to crack off. The timber underneath appears sound.

The forecabin contains a set of cockpit cushions and the cockpit table, with

an adjustable aluminium "Lagun" mounting bracket, also some extra sails, including a storm jib.

When photographed there was a fault in the wiring to the instruments: this has now been sorted

and all instruments work. Below: The engine has recently been test run by a marine engineer.

Deck

The deck has been painted a few years ago, using what appears to be domestic masonry vinyl paint.

It is extensively cracking and flaking, exposing the original grey gelcoat finish underneath.

Rig

This yacht needs substantial work, but most of it is cosmetic and DIY work. The last known standing rigging change was over 20 years ago, so this will need to be changed. The club where the yacht is stored ashore does have the facility to crane out masts, so the rigging can be changed significantly more cheaply than in many other locations.

Cockpit

Between the solar panel on the sprayhood and the wind generator on the counter the batteries are in good condition and fully charged. The wind generator mount also includes a crane arm for lifting a dinghy outboard.

Underbody

Yes - this is a project, but one with a sound basis to start from of a professionally built yacht with an inventory of decent sails and some very good equipment. It would not be cost effective to seek to get work done commercially, but virtually everything needed to bring this yacht back to life is simple if time-consuming DIY work.
