Sailplan

The Moody 346 was introduced in June 1986 as an update to the Moody 34, itself a modernised replacement for the old Angus Primrose designed Moody 33/333 range. These Dixon-designed models were considerably sleeker looking than the earlier Primrose designs, yet retained all the virtues of interior space and good sailing performance. The interior fit-out of the 34 and 346 was also to a significantly better standard than the earlier 33s, which used a lot of plastic laminates instead of wood.

The Moody 34 and 346 are virtually identical, except that the 346 has a transom bathing/boarding platform. The Moody 346 continued in production until mid-1990, proving one of the most successful designs for the company.

The Moody 346 has a slightly lower profile and more elegant deck line than the contemporary equivalent models from Westerly such as the Seahawk, Oceanquest and Oceandream - the Westerlys however having more interior headroom.

Aft cabin

The reason the Moody 346 was so popular (and remains so) is the excellent aft cabin, with on the
port side a good double berth and a small vanity unit with sink and mirror, as well as seating
or an extra single berth to starboard.

Engine

The engine is a Thornycroft T80 four-cylinder 1.4 litre freshwater cooled diesel which is a
marinised version of the Mitsubishi K4 industrial engine, with good spares availability.
Normal acess is via a large panel in the walkthrough to the aft cabin, though the
cockpit sole above can also be removed for major jobs.
